New Set

So here we are again. At the beginning of a new year, which means a beginning of a new series. And with a new series comes a new set design. So I figured I would take you all through the journey of a new set at PVC.
I have to admit this is not the "all out" set that required months of planning and work before it got on the stage, it is an abstract design that really lets us do a lot with lighting and create some great moods on stage. With each new set design we start with a sketch:
Our idea was to place 9 various sized columns on stage mixed with greenery. The columns would be lit from the ground with LED's and be 1 1/2 ft. square, ranging from 10 ft. tall to 4 ft. tall. We knew for sure that we were going to need a bunch of spandex to wrap around the columns. Jorge was all over this one, he knew just the place to find a plethora of spandex. The spandex was cut to length and sewn together to form tubes that went from top to bottom of the columns.
Next was, how do we build the frame? We decided to use metal studs, not the bulky ones you buy at Lowes or Home Depot. They are 1 5/8 in. 25 gauge studs. They are a great slim look and very light and easy to work with. We found them at an acoustical/drywall building supplier, at about $2.50 for a 10 ft. stud. So we got a bunch of that and the tracking for the top and bottom plates of the columns:
Some other things we had on hand:
A Good Drill Self Tapping Screws Clamps Tin Snips
It may be a little difficult at first if you are not used to working with metal. But, basically we started with the tracking first and built our top and bottom foundations 1 1/2 square:
Then we used the studs and build the corners:
And stretched the spandex over each column:
The taller ones did need some bracing on the top and bottom:
But I think the finished product really turned out nice (at least for a few weeks):
Its always a lot of work any time we do a set change, but its fun to see the finished product. What do you think?

Awesome work! Looks really good bro. Nice, clean and the lighting is making a great visual.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention the greenery did not match, so it got the ax.
Looks good. Any time you can ax greenery it's a good thing! What will you do with the columns when the series is over?
PVC is keeing the spandex industry in biz. I love this post.
i miss a good stage set. :(
looks great chidol!
Wow, what dedication it takes to make the stage look so great. I never knew what it took to pull it off but hats off to you and your crew for making it happen. I never cease to be amazed at the finished product.
